Vintage Antique Advertising Mason's Challenge Blacking Wood Display Box

  

Here is a general store mercantile wood display box for Mason's Challenge Blacking. The box is from the 1800s, nicely constructed with dovetail joints. It measures 11 1/2 inches wide by 7 3/4 deep and just under 5 inches in height.

Counter display held 3 dozen tins of No. The outside of the box and label have been varnished... The company was housed in Philadelphia. Of the box, there are no splits in the wood, wonderful old saw marks on top. The lid is attached with a simple wire type hinge and in good working condition. Inside is original no finish wood, some dust included. The print inside shows a livery boy awaiting the polishing of his masters boots, who is waiting in a carriage on the street. An African American Black man of huge stature has polished the shoes so bright that a little dog can see his reflection in the boot. I have wondered if this was for stove blacking, as the word shoe polish is not mentioned....

The black memorabilia advertising sign on the top may be a fooler! Really a very good condition display, downgraded only by the dark varnish/stain applied by a previous owner to pretty up the wood.
